What "free bet" actually means in SA
In the SA market a free bet usually means one of three things:
- No-deposit free bet - You sign up, complete FICA, and the operator credits a small free bet amount (typically R10-R25). No deposit required.
- Risk-free first bet - You deposit and place a real-money bet. If it loses, the operator refunds the stake as a free bet (or, in the cleanest cases, as cash).
- Matched deposit with a free bet component - You deposit and the operator matches the deposit, with part of the match coming as a free bet rather than wager-able cash.
The first two are genuinely free. The third is a bonus, not a free bet, and we don't classify them as such on our rankings.
Common terms to watch for
- Minimum odds - Most free bets require the qualifying bet to be placed at minimum odds of around 1.50. If you bet at lower odds, the offer doesn't trigger.
- Wagering requirement - The number of times you need to roll over the free bet winnings before you can withdraw. Anything above 5x is steep.
- Expiry - Most free bets expire 7 days after issue. A few extend to 30 days.
