The Season 5 schedule landed in July, so the guesswork is over: SA20 starts on Sunday 17 January 2027 and finishes at Newlands on Sunday 21 February. Sunrisers Eastern Cape open at home against Pretoria Capitals, which is the Season 4 final played again with the trophy still in Gqeberha. Three titles in four seasons makes Sunrisers the side everyone else is building against.

Between now and January there's one date that actually matters, and it isn't a fixture. The mini-auction on 7 October 2026 puts 20 playing spots on the table, and Joburg Super Kings walk in with the biggest hole after releasing their captain. We've put the auction state of play first, because that's what moves prices when the outright markets open.

State of Play: The 7 October Mini-Auction

All six teams locked in their retentions and pre-signings in early August 2026, and what's left goes under the hammer on 7 October from 14:00 SAST in Johannesburg. ESPNcricinfo puts 20 playing spots up for grabs, and one of those is a wild card only Joburg Super Kings can use, a pick that does not come out of their salary cap.

Two teams are sitting the whole thing out. Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants have already signed complete 19-player squads, so their Season 5 business is done (Sportstar). The same ESPNcricinfo report has Sunrisers Eastern Cape signing Mitchell Marsh for Season 5, which is the champions topping up a squad that already wins tournaments.

Team Auction Status What It Means
Joburg Super Kings Most slots open Released Faf du Plessis, Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger. New head coach, no captain named yet, and the one wild card pick that sits outside the cap.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape Bidding Squad core retained, Mitchell Marsh signed. Champions topping up rather than rebuilding.
MI Cape Town Bidding Mumbai's SA arm back in the room after missing the Season 4 final.
Pretoria Capitals Bidding Season 4 runners-up, and still chasing a first title after two losing finals.
Paarl Royals Not bidding Full 19-player squad already signed. Nothing left to buy.
Durban's Super Giants Not bidding Full 19-player squad already signed. Kingsmead plans are set.

Joburg Super Kings Have Torn It Up

This is the off-season story of Season 5. Joburg Super Kings released captain Faf du Plessis, along with Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger, and put Albie Morkel in the head coach's chair in place of Stephen Fleming, as Sunday Times reported. Letting go of your captain, an all-rounder and a left-arm quick in one window is not a tidy-up. It's a reset.

As of early August they hadn't named a replacement captain, which is the piece we'd want settled before backing them in anything season-long. A CSK-backed franchise that has made the playoffs every season without winning it has now changed the coach and the dressing-room leadership at the same time. That can go either way, and the mini-auction is where we find out which direction they're heading.

The practical read for punters: JSK are the one squad that will look materially different on 8 October to how it looks today. Paarl and Durban's Super Giants are the two you can already assess properly.

What Is SA20?

SA20 is South Africa's T20 franchise cricket league, launched by Cricket South Africa in January 2023. Six teams, each backed by an IPL franchise, compete across January and February each year. The IPL tie-in brings serious financial backing and access to a global player pool most domestic leagues would take a decade to build.

The January and February window sits in the quiet stretch of the IPL cycle, so the overseas players who turn up are the ones you actually want to watch. Six venues, from St George's Park to Kingsmead.

Each of the 6 teams plays the other 5 twice in the group stage, so that's 30 matches before the playoffs start. The top four advance: the top two meet in Qualifier 1, with the winner going straight to the final. The loser gets a second shot via Qualifier 2 against the Eliminator winner (3rd vs 4th), so the two best teams have a safety net that the lower seeds don't.

All six franchises are IPL-backed, so the recruitment budgets are serious and the player networks run deep. Retentions and pre-signings were confirmed in early August 2026, so here's where each club stands heading into the mini-auction.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape
2026 Champions | 3x winners
Three titles from four seasons makes SEC the team to beat, full stop. Owned by Sunrisers Hyderabad under Kavya Maran, they play home games at St George's Park in Gqeberha. Their bowling unit, with Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen in front, is the reason they win tournaments. The catch is that defending champions at short prices offer limited value, so we'd wait to see if the market overreacts before backing them outright.

MI Cape Town
2025 Champions
Mumbai Indians' SA franchise won it in 2025 and lost the 2026 final, so they'll arrive for Season 5 with a point to prove. Newlands is their home ground, one of the finest batting tracks in SA cricket, and Mumbai's resources mean their squad depth doesn't thin out in the middle overs. The 2025 title shows they can beat SEC when conditions suit them.
Home: Newlands, Cape Town IPL Owner: Mumbai Indians
Joburg Super Kings
Rebuilding | Albie Morkel in charge
CSK's SA franchise plays out of The Wanderers in Johannesburg, where high totals are the norm and big hits get the crowd going. Season 5 is a reset: Faf du Plessis, Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger were all released, Albie Morkel replaced Stephen Fleming as head coach, and no new captain had been named as of early August. They have the most slots to fill on 7 October, so judge this squad after the auction, not before.

Pretoria Capitals
2026 Runners-up
Hollywoodbets owns the Pretoria Capitals franchise, and the backing shows in a squad that's reached two SA20 finals. SuperSport Park in Centurion offers pace-friendly conditions early, which sets the tone for their style. Dewald Brevis scored the first SA20 final century in 2026, Sherfane Rutherford anchored their batting throughout, and yet they've still not won the title. Two runners-up finishes in four seasons means the hunger is real heading into 2027.
Home: SuperSport Park, Centurion Owner: Hollywoodbets
Paarl Royals
Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals' SA franchise plays at Boland Park in Paarl, in the Cape Winelands. Boland's small dimensions and the Cape wind make it one of the highest-scoring venues in the competition, which suits the Royals' attacking batting style. Their approach leans on developing younger players, meaning you sometimes get surprise names in key roles. Worth watching for bowling prop markets where their spin depth can be decisive.

Durban's Super Giants
Squad complete | Not bidding
Lucknow's SA franchise plays at Kingsmead, where the sea breeze off the Indian Ocean does things to swing bowling that catch visiting teams cold. They've already signed a full 19-player squad, so they're skipping the mini-auction entirely and you can assess them now rather than in October. Durban's Super Giants haven't won the title yet, but Kingsmead is a genuine home fortress. Good value in home-match betting, trickier to back outright given the title drought.

SA20 Betting Markets

All five major SA bookmakers carry SA20 markets. Here's where the value usually sits, market by market.

Tournament Winner Season-Long
Back a team to lift the trophy before a ball is bowled. SEC will open as short favourites given three titles in four seasons, which means the value sits elsewhere. The two-qualifier playoff format gives the top two sides a safety net, but it also means a single bad knockout game ends their tournament. We'd look at the second and third favourite rather than backing SEC at cramped prices.
Opens: 4-6 weeks pre-tournament Best angle: Second or third favourite
Match Winner Core Market
Back one team to win a specific match. The toss matters more in SA20 than in most T20 leagues, particularly at Kingsmead and The Wanderers where chasing or setting a target can be a very different proposition. Check the pitch report and recent venue history before committing to a match winner, especially in the group stage where conditions can shift game to game.
Toss impact: Significant Venue: Key factor
Top Batsman Player Prop
Pick the player who'll score the most runs across the full tournament. Openers accumulate fastest by default, but a settled middle-order bat on a team that makes the final can catch them. The catch is that batting positions shift and teams adjust mid-tournament, so what looks settled in week one can look very different by the playoffs. Target openers on playoff-bound sides and leave the fancy names alone.
Best position: Opener or No. 3 Typical winner: 300-500 runs
Top Bowler Player Prop
Pick the highest wicket-taker across the tournament. SA20 pitches favour pace in the powerplay, which is why Nortje and Rabada have dominated this market in past seasons. A bowler on a team that reaches the final picks up two or three extra matches compared to a group-stage-only team, so backing a pace bowler from one of the top two or three seeds makes structural sense.
Best option: Pace bowlers Playoff bonus: Extra games
Total Runs (Match) Match Market
Bet on whether total match runs go over or under a set line. This is one of the more approachable SA20 markets if you've done your venue homework. The Wanderers and Boland Park run hot. Kingsmead and St George's run cooler, especially early in the tournament when pitches haven't been hit hard. Worth building a simple cheat sheet per ground before the group stage.
High-scoring venues: Wanderers, Boland Park Lower-scoring: Kingsmead, St George's
Man of the Match High Risk
Predict the individual award winner for a specific game. The field is always open, which makes it high-variance as a standalone bet. We'd only use this as a multi leg alongside a match winner rather than betting it alone. Odds are usually generous, which is the bookmaker telling you something about the difficulty of picking it right.
Odds range: 6/1 to 25/1 Best use: Accumulator leg
Player Props Match-Level
Individual player performance markets have expanded at SA bookmakers over the past two SA20 seasons. Betway and Hollywoodbets carry the richest prop coverage: over/under on a batter's runs in a specific match, bowler wickets, first wicket method, and first boundary. Coverage deepens as the tournament progresses, so the group stage is thinner than the knockouts. The golden rule: confirm the team sheet before placing any batting or bowling prop. A player not named in the XI is a dead loss, no refunds.
Availability: Betway, Hollywoodbets primarily Key rule: Confirm team sheets first Best match-ups: Group stage, knockout games

Key Dates

SA20 confirmed the Season 5 dates in July 2026. Five weeks of cricket, opening on Sunday 17 January 2027 and closing with the final at Newlands on Sunday 21 February, per the SA20 fixture list and ESPNcricinfo.

Date Event Venue Time / Note
7 Oct 2026 Mini-auction, 20 spots Off-field Squads finalised
Sun 17 Jan 2027 Opener: Sunrisers Eastern Cape v Pretoria Capitals St George's Park, Gqeberha 15:30
Mon 18 Jan 2027 Paarl Royals v Joburg Super Kings Boland Park, Paarl 17:30
Sun 21 Feb 2027 SA20 Season 5 final Newlands, Cape Town Season decider

The opener is the Season 4 final again: Sunrisers beat Pretoria by 6 wickets at Newlands in February 2026, and now Pretoria have to go to St George's Park and face the same side on day one. That is a proper way to start a tournament, and a 15:30 Sunday start means most of the country is watching.

Day two moves to Boland Park, where Paarl Royals host Joburg Super Kings at 17:30. Boland is the highest-scoring ground in the competition and JSK will be fielding a squad rebuilt under a new coach, so it's the first honest look we get at the Morkel era.

Ante-Post Odds

We're four months out from the first ball, so there is no SA20 Season 5 outright market to quote yet, and we're not going to make prices up. SA bookmakers open cricket outrights roughly four to six weeks before a tournament starts, which puts the first Season 5 boards somewhere in December 2026.

What matters is what you do with those four months. Here's the sequence we're working to.

  • Before 7 October: nothing to bet. Read the retention lists and note which teams still have holes in their top order or their death bowling.
  • 7 October, auction day: watch where the 20 spots land. Joburg Super Kings are the story, because they're replacing a captain and hold the one wild card that sits outside the cap.
  • 8 October onwards: Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants are already fully signed, so they're the two squads you can judge on merit right now. Everyone else gets reassessed after the auction.
  • December, when boards open: Sunrisers will be short. Three titles in four seasons does that. The value question is whether the market has properly priced a rebuilt JSK, and whether Pretoria drift after a second losing final.
  • Mid-January, team sheets: the last piece. Overseas availability shifts late and a missing frontline seamer changes a price faster than any form line.

The trap with SA20 ante-post is that squads aren't final until the auction and the team sheets land. A side that loses a key overseas player before the first ball can drift badly, and you're stuck on a price that no longer reflects reality. Our preference is to wait, accept slightly shorter prices, and bet with more information.

Previous Champions

The honours board is short. Sunrisers Eastern Cape won Seasons 1, 2 and 4, MI Cape Town took Season 3 in 2025, and nobody else has lifted it. Pretoria Capitals have now lost two finals.

Season Champion Runner-Up Final Result Venue
2023 Sunrisers Eastern Cape Pretoria Capitals 4 wickets Wanderers, Johannesburg
2024 Sunrisers Eastern Cape Durban's Super Giants 89 runs Newlands, Cape Town
2025 MI Cape Town Sunrisers Eastern Cape 76 runs Wanderers, Johannesburg
2026 Sunrisers Eastern Cape Pretoria Capitals 6 wickets Newlands, Cape Town
2027 Season 5 - 17 January to 21 February 2027, final at Newlands

SEC keep winning because they keep a settled core and they bowl fast. MI Cape Town proved in 2025 that the sequence can be broken, and Pretoria have twice got to the last day and lost it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SA20 cricket?

SA20 is South Africa's T20 franchise cricket league, launched by Cricket South Africa in January 2023. Six IPL-backed teams compete in a January-February window each year. Four seasons in, it's established itself as one of the stronger domestic T20 competitions in the game globally.

When does SA20 Season 5 (2027) take place?

Season 5 runs from Sunday 17 January 2027 to Sunday 21 February 2027. Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha at 15:30 SAST in the opener, a rematch of the Season 4 final. The final is at Newlands in Cape Town on 21 February 2027.

Which teams play in SA20?

Six teams: Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SRH), MI Cape Town (Mumbai Indians), Joburg Super Kings (CSK), Pretoria Capitals (Hollywoodbets-owned), Paarl Royals (Rajasthan Royals), and Durban's Super Giants (Lucknow Super Giants). Five franchises are IPL-backed; Pretoria Capitals are owned by Hollywoodbets.

Who won SA20 in 2026?

Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the 2026 title, beating Pretoria Capitals by 6 wickets at Newlands in Cape Town. Matthew Breetzke made 68 not out and Marco Jansen took 3 for 28. Dewald Brevis became the first player to score a SA20 final century in that same match, though it wasn't enough for Pretoria to take the trophy.

Which bookmakers are best for SA20 betting?

Betway is the official SA20 league sponsor and carries the widest market range. Hollywoodbets, WSB, Sportingbet, and Gbets all cover tournament winner, match winner, top batsman, and top bowler. Ante-post markets typically open four to six weeks before the first match, so expect Season 5 outrights from around December 2026.

When is the SA20 mini-auction for Season 5?

The mini-auction is on 7 October 2026 in Johannesburg, from 14:00 SAST. ESPNcricinfo puts 20 playing spots on the table, one of them a wild card for Joburg Super Kings that does not come out of the salary cap. Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants already carry full 19-player squads and will not bid.

How does the SA20 format work?

Each team plays every other team twice in the group stage, producing 30 matches. The top four advance to the playoffs. The top two play Qualifier 1, winner going straight to the final. The Qualifier 1 loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2 against the Eliminator winner (3rd vs 4th). The winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 meet in the final.
