The SA20 mini-auction is on 7 October 2026 in Johannesburg, starting at 14:00 SAST. ESPNcricinfo reports 20 playing spots up for grabs, including a wild card for Joburg Super Kings that does not come out of the salary cap. Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants already carry full 19-player squads and will not bid.

The Season 5 schedule landed in July, so the guesswork is over: SA20 starts on Sunday 17 January 2027 and finishes at Newlands on Sunday 21 February. Sunrisers Eastern Cape open at home against Pretoria Capitals, which is the Season 4 final played again with the trophy still in Gqeberha. Three titles in four seasons makes Sunrisers the side everyone else is building against.

Between now and January there's one date that actually matters, and it isn't a fixture. The mini-auction on 7 October 2026 puts 20 playing spots on the table, and Joburg Super Kings walk in with the biggest hole after releasing their captain. We've put the auction state of play first, because that's what moves prices when the outright markets open.

State of Play: The 7 October Mini-Auction

All six teams locked in their retentions and pre-signings in early August 2026, and what's left goes under the hammer on 7 October from 14:00 SAST in Johannesburg. ESPNcricinfo puts 20 playing spots up for grabs, and one of those is a wild card only Joburg Super Kings can use, a pick that does not come out of their salary cap.

Two teams are sitting the whole thing out. Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants have already signed complete 19-player squads, so their Season 5 business is done (Sportstar). The same ESPNcricinfo report has Sunrisers Eastern Cape signing Mitchell Marsh for Season 5, which is the champions topping up a squad that already wins tournaments.

Joburg Super Kings Have Torn It Up

This is the off-season story of Season 5. Joburg Super Kings released captain Faf du Plessis, along with Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger, and put Albie Morkel in the head coach's chair in place of Stephen Fleming, as Sunday Times reported. Letting go of your captain, an all-rounder and a left-arm quick in one window is not a tidy-up. It's a reset.

As of early August they hadn't named a replacement captain, which is the piece we'd want settled before backing them in anything season-long. A CSK-backed franchise that has made the playoffs every season without winning it has now changed the coach and the dressing-room leadership at the same time. That can go either way, and the mini-auction is where we find out which direction they're heading.

The practical read for punters: JSK are the one squad that will look materially different on 8 October to how it looks today. Paarl and Durban's Super Giants are the two you can already assess properly.

What Is SA20?

SA20 is South Africa's T20 franchise cricket league, launched by Cricket South Africa in January 2023. Six teams, each backed by an IPL franchise, compete across January and February each year. The IPL tie-in brings serious financial backing and access to a global player pool most domestic leagues would take a decade to build.

The January and February window sits in the quiet stretch of the IPL cycle, so the overseas players who turn up are the ones you actually want to watch. Six venues, from St George's Park to Kingsmead.

Each of the 6 teams plays the other 5 twice in the group stage, so that's 30 matches before the playoffs start. The top four advance: the top two meet in Qualifier 1, with the winner going straight to the final. The opener is the Season 4 final again: Sunrisers beat Pretoria by 6 wickets at Newlands in February 2026, and now Pretoria have to go to St George's Park and face the same side on day one. That is a proper way to start a tournament, and a 15:30 Sunday start means most of the country is watching.

Day two moves to Boland Park, where Paarl Royals host Joburg Super Kings at 17:30. Boland is the highest-scoring ground in the competition and JSK will be fielding a squad rebuilt under a new coach, so it's the first honest look we get at the Morkel era.

Ante-Post Odds

We're four months out from the first ball, so there is no SA20 Season 5 outright market to quote yet, and we're not going to make prices up. SA bookmakers open cricket outrights roughly four to six weeks before a tournament starts, which puts the first Season 5 boards somewhere in December 2026.

December, when boards open: Sunrisers will be short. Three titles in four seasons does that. The value question is whether the market has properly priced a rebuilt JSK, and whether Pretoria drift after a second losing final.
Mid-January, team sheets: the last piece. Overseas availability shifts late and a missing frontline seamer changes a price faster than any form line.

The trap with SA20 ante-post is that squads aren't final until the auction and the team sheets land. A side that loses a key overseas player before the first ball can drift badly, and you're stuck on a price that no longer reflects reality.
