Spain v Uruguay tips: Madrid hosts have the scoring edge
Spain are our pick in Madrid. Their 32-19 win over Tonga was the more controlled performance in a comparison with Uruguay's three high-scoring July games. Uruguay scored at least 34 every time but could not turn that output into a victory.

Spain found control against Tonga
Spain drew 42-42 with Canada, beat Tonga 32-19 and lost 29-22 to the USA. The opening game was open at both ends, but the Tonga win brought a much stronger defensive contribution.
The final defeat was also competitive. Spain stayed within seven of a USA side that finished July unbeaten, leaving them with one win, one draw and a close loss.
The 42 conceded to Canada remains a warning. Uruguay have shown they can score heavily, so Spain need the defensive work from the latter two matches rather than a repeat of the opener.
Uruguay's attack has not been the problem
Uruguay lost 41-34 to Georgia, drew 36-36 with Romania and lost 42-40 to Hong Kong China. Their 110 points scored brought no wins because the defence conceded 119.
The final defeat was particularly frustrating. Forty points would have beaten many opponents in the competition, but Hong Kong China scored two more and took the result.
That gives Spain a clear opportunity. Uruguay have allowed every opponent to reach at least 36, while Spain have already won a match with a lower attacking total because their defence did enough.
Joaquin Myszka leads the tournament's try-scoring list. Uruguay have a finishing threat that Spain must account for, making defensive control more useful here than simply trying to win another open scoring contest.

Both teams have experience of tight finishes
Spain's draw and seven-point defeat were close contests. Uruguay's draw and two-point defeat show how little separated them from a different July record.
We therefore expect a competitive match rather than treating Uruguay's winless start as evidence of a large gap. Their attack kept them involved against all three opponents, including unbeaten Georgia.
The Madrid hosts get our vote because they have shown more defensive control. Uruguay have repeatedly needed to outscore a substantial concession, and that is a difficult way to keep chasing results.
