Georgia v Canada tips: Unbeaten hosts to keep control

Georgia should beat Canada in Tbilisi. Three July wins included a 49-22 finish against Chile, while Canada needed a four-point margin to get past Zimbabwe. The hosts have shown they can win both a high-scoring contest and a match in which their defence keeps the opposition much quieter.

Georgia improved as July progressed

Georgia began with a 41-34 win over Uruguay, beat Samoa 33-12 and finished 49-22 against Chile. Each match ended in victory, with the final two producing margins of 21 and 27.

Keeping Samoa to 12 means Canada face more than a home side capable of scoring heavily. Georgia demonstrated that they could prevent an opponent from staying in touch while extending the lead.

The Chile result adds weight to that record. Chile won their other two games, against Romania and Hong Kong China, so Georgia's perfect start was not built entirely against sides without a victory.

Luka Matkava leads the tournament's points scoring with 49. His contribution gives Georgia a consistent source of points within an attack that has already exceeded 30 in every match.

Canada recovered, but only narrowly

Canada drew 42-42 with Spain and lost 38-14 to Portugal before beating Zimbabwe 23-19. The final result rescued a victory from the window, although the margin was considerably narrower than Georgia's last two wins.

The 42 against Spain remains the strongest Canadian attacking performance. Conceding the same total stopped it becoming a win, and the following defeat by Portugal brought a much smaller contribution with the ball.

That makes the change of opponent significant. Canada now face a side that scored at least 33 in all three matches and has already won a game in which the opposition reached 34.

Mason Flesch is a concrete threat for the visitors. He scored twice in the draw with Spain and again in the win over Zimbabwe, contributing from the second and back row rather than leaving all the finishing to the backs.

The Georgian defence is the separator

Canada and Georgia both scored more than 40 in July. Georgia followed that with two wins in which the defence conceded 12 and 22, while Canada had to recover from a 24-point defeat.

Canada's four-point win over Zimbabwe offers evidence that they can protect a close result. Georgia's later victories suggest they are much less likely to let this fixture remain within that range.

We expect Georgia's consistency to count in Tbilisi. Their attack has stayed productive against three different opponents, while Canada have not repeated the scoring output of their opening draw.
