Titans v Dolphins tips: Openers give Titans the early edge

The Titans are our pick after Rivaldo Moonsamy and Lhuan-dre Pretorius added 61 against the Lions. The Dolphins have now started badly in successive completed games, slipping to 12/3 against Boland and 33/3 against Eastern Storm on Friday. Their attack also let Storm's openers add 84, so the opening partnership is the clearest difference.

Friday's defeat leaves the Dolphins on the brink

The Dolphins' Tuesday match against the Cobras was abandoned without a ball bowled, and on Friday night they lost to Eastern Storm in Benoni. Lightning stopped their chase in the 17th over at 118/5, eight runs behind the DLS target.

That leaves them needing to win in Centurion, preferably with a bonus point, and to hope other results go their way. Hanu Viljoen made 46 from 32 balls, but he was dropped three times and the chase never recovered from 33/3.

Moonsamy gave the chase a foundation

Moonsamy made 61 from 41 balls against the Lions, sharing a 61-run opening partnership with Pretorius. That put the Titans into the chase before the middle order lost momentum.

Pretorius contributed 29, but the innings changed after his dismissal. Brevis, Galiem, Ferreira and Phahlamohlaka failed to get going, leaving the Titans short of the required support around Moonsamy.

Ethan Bosch's nine-ball 25 helped lift the total to 191/7. It denied the Lions a bonus-point victory but did not close the remaining 15-run gap.

The Dolphins' opening problem was more severe

The Dolphins fell to 12/3 against Boland on 1 November. Viljoen's 114 and Zuma's unbeaten 42 then produced a 162-run fourth-wicket partnership, rescuing the side to 174/4.

That was an exceptional recovery rather than a strong start, and Friday's top order did little better. Romashan Pillay, Parsons and Jason Smith had already departed cheaply, leaving the rest of the innings dependent on one long stand.

The Titans' openers provide a more stable recent comparison. Moonsamy and Pretorius made a substantial contribution before the wickets, while the Dolphins needed their middle order to rebuild almost the whole innings.

Both attacks have a clear repair job

The Lions made 206/3 against the Titans, with Esterhuizen and Van Buuren adding an unbeaten 131. That gives the Dolphins' middle order an obvious route into the contest if the same bowling problems continue.

The Dolphins conceded 178/3 to Boland, whose opening pair added 119, and then let Ronan Herrmann and Kabelo Sekhukhune add 84 for Storm's first wicket. Moonsamy and Pretorius therefore face an attack that has struggled to separate two openers in successive completed games.

The Titans need more after the opening stand

The early preference goes to the Titans because their strongest batting contribution lines up with the Dolphins' latest bowling weakness. Moonsamy and Pretorius have already supplied a platform together.

The middle order must do more than it did against the Lions. Viljoen's century shows the Dolphins can recover from a poor start and still post a challenging total, so an opening partnership alone will not finish the job.
