Eastern Storm v Warriors tips: Visitors' seam attack appeals

The Warriors remain our selection in Benoni. Hendricks, Mungroo and Bedja combined for five wickets while conceding 54 runs in their 12 overs against the Cobras on 31 October. Eastern Storm beat the Dolphins on Friday behind Ronan Herrmann's 87, but they are already out of semi-final contention.

The Warriors applied pressure beyond the powerplay

Beuran Hendricks and Kerwin Mungroo bowled the first six overs against the Cobras on 31 October, restricting them to 17/3. The early movement produced edges and left the innings in recovery mode almost immediately.

Wesley Bedja then finished with 2/19, adding another effective spell after the new-ball work. Across the three bowlers, the Warriors received 12 overs for 54 runs and five wickets.

The attack held up again on Thursday in Gqeberha, keeping Boland to 138/5 after they chose to bat. Lehan Botha's 50 from 47 balls was the only innings that got away from them.

Storm found their long innings against the Dolphins

Ronan Herrmann made 87 from 61 balls on Friday night, sharing an 84-run opening stand with Kabelo Sekhukhune. That was exactly the innings Eastern Storm had lacked against the Badgers on 31 October, when Sekhukhune's 25 was their top score in 144/7.

The context matters, though. The Dolphins dropped Sekhukhune on 25 and 31, and lightning ended their chase in the 17th over with them eight runs short of the DLS target.

Storm can no longer reach the semi-finals, so Sunday is about form rather than standings for the hosts. The question is whether one big innings repeats against a sharper seam attack than the one they faced on Friday.

The Warriors' batting is less convincing

Chasing 139 against Boland, the Warriors finished on 138/7 and then lost the Super Over. Tristan Stubbs made 40 from 40 balls and Senuran Muthusamy 25, but Lizaad Williams closed out both the final over and the eliminator.

That followed a six-wicket chase of 131 against the Cobras, where Whitehead took 5/20 and King's unbeaten 32 got them home. Two tight finishes in a row suggest the visitors cannot treat a modest target as routine.

That is the opening for Storm. If Herrmann bats deep again and their bowlers separate the Warriors' middle order, the match could stay competitive.

The bowling comparison decides the preference

The Warriors' new-ball and first-change spells remain the most consistent team performance across these recent matches. Eastern Storm's Friday total leant heavily on one batter and on dropped catches.

We favour the visitors because their strongest recent work targets the hosts' main weakness, and they still have more to play for. Their batting through two narrow finishes keeps the prediction measured.
