Sunderland are short of everything

Régis Le Bris' side lost 3-1 at Coventry on Saturday, with Enzo Le Fée's penalty their only reply. Omar Alderete was sent off for a second booking in stoppage time and will miss this game.

Sunderland have one league win all season, 1-0 against Fulham in August. They have lost to Arsenal and Brighton at home and drew 0-0 with Leeds there last month.

The bigger problem is the schedule. Sunderland lost 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League on Thursday and have three days to recover.

Chelsea arrive rested

Xabi Alonso's team beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday through Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer penalty. They have scored 19 league goals in nine games.

Reece James, Maxence Lacroix and João Pedro are all out. Jordan Henderson and Emiliano Martínez are back in training, with Alonso deciding on Martínez after Saturday's session. Moisés Caicedo is a doubt with discomfort after the United game.

Chelsea have had a full week to prepare. Away from home they have won at Fulham and Everton and lost at Arsenal and Brentford.

Why we back the away win

Chelsea at nearly even money is fair given the absences. Sunderland have to find goals from somewhere, and they have scored more than once in only one league game.

A draw or home win beats us, but the gap in form, rest and squad depth all points the same way. We would not cover the draw at this price.
