Key Takeaways
  • Australia host France at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on Saturday 11 July, kickoff 17:30 AEST which is 09:30 SAST, in Nations Championship Round 2.
  • Both sides lost round one, Australia 33-31 to Ireland after leading by 12, and France 34-32 to New Zealand despite pushing the All Blacks to the wire.
  • France remain without Antoine Dupont, Louis Bielle-Biarrey and now Damian Penaud, which keeps the handicap live for the Wallabies.

Joe Schmidt's Wallabies are staring down a sixth straight defeat and it comes against a France side that is far from firing on all cylinders itself. Australia let a 12-point lead slip against Ireland in Sydney and now host France at Suncorp Stadium in round two of the Nations Championship. We think this is close enough for the handicap to be the smarter play than either side's outright price.

The Form Line

Australia lost 33-31 to Ireland in Sydney in round one after blowing a 12-point lead, their sixth straight Test defeat and the first time an Australian side has lost five in a row since 2023. Tries from Pietsch, Campbell, Canham, Lonergan and McDermott showed the attacking game is there, but Tate McDermott admitted the Wallabies "gave them one too many opportunities" in the closing stages.

France also lost their opener, going down 34-32 to New Zealand in Christchurch despite starting as underdogs on the handicap line and having the All Blacks hanging on at the death. Les Bleus were already missing Antoine Dupont and Louis Bielle-Biarrey for the tournament's opening rounds, and Damian Penaud has since picked up a knock that rules him out for the next two weeks. France are still the reigning Six Nations champions and carry a three-match winning run over Australia dating back to 2021.

Head to Head

YearCompetitionResult
2025End of year tour, ParisFrance 48 Australia 33

France beat Australia 48-33 in Paris at the end of 2025, extending a run of three straight wins over the Wallabies in the fixture. Australia have not beaten France since 2021.

Team News

Ryan Lonergan copped a knock to the sternum against Ireland and the Wallabies are hopeful he backs up at scrumhalf, while Carter Gordon was withdrawn for cramp rather than a serious issue. Debutant lock Josh Canham impressed in his first start and should keep his place. For France, the tournament-opening absences of Antoine Dupont and Louis Bielle-Biarrey continue, and Damian Penaud is now also sidelined for a fortnight after his injury against New Zealand.

Verdict

Both sides arrive off round one defeats but France's was against the All Blacks away from home, while Australia's was a lead they let slip against Ireland at home. We lean toward France's greater squad depth and recent head to head hold over the Wallabies, but Australia covering the handicap looks the value given how open this Nations Championship has been through round one. The tries market also looks live given both attacks found the line repeatedly last weekend.
