National Gambling Board Launches R10 Million Responsible Betting Campaign

The National Gambling Board (NGB) has launched a public awareness campaign on responsible betting, with a specific focus on 18-25 year olds. The campaign includes TV spots, social media content, and new guidelines for how operators should promote responsible gambling tools.

What the campaign covers

The NGB's push targets three areas: deposit limit awareness, self-exclusion options, and the normalisation of betting in youth culture. South Africa has seen a sharp rise in online betting among young adults, driven largely by Aviator, Spina Zonke, and the proliferation of betting apps.

The campaign materials encourage bettors to set deposit limits, take regular breaks, and use self-exclusion tools when gambling stops being fun.

What operators must do

Licensed operators are expected to display responsible gambling messaging more prominently on their platforms. Hollywoodbets, Betway, Supabets, and World Sports Betting already have responsible gambling sections, but the NGB wants these to be harder to miss - not buried in footer links.

Expect to see pop-up reminders about session duration, clearer deposit limit settings, and potentially mandatory cool-off periods after extended sessions.

Our position

This is a welcome move. The growth of online betting in SA has outpaced the regulatory framework, and younger players are particularly vulnerable. We encourage all readers to use the tools available - every reputable operator offers deposit limits, loss limits, and self-exclusion.
